It’s no wonder parents are alarmed. A US Department of Education report released last month, ranks Nevada among the lowest in the nation for implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). You may know the IDEA as the law that protects the right for all children to get a free and appropriate education. Only the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, the Bureau of Indian Education, and the island country of Palau ranked lower in “determinations on implementation of the IDEA” in children aged 3-21.
Even adults without children understand that the role of a parent is to raise future citizens. In addition to the above report, Nevada ranks lowest in the national for per-pupil spending, yet highest for metrics like high-school dropout and teen pregnancy rates. With teachers in Clark County ready to strike for basic necessities like simple wage increases and adequate healthcare, parents with children, especially those of little ones with special needs, are seeking options – alternatives, really – to ensure their child’s success.
